Seminars on a variety of topics of interest to staff, board members and volunteers in the nonprofit community are being offered throughout the year by a number of sponsoring organizations in our region. Fees for workshops will vary depending upon subject, time frame and speaker. Opportunities to join and attend meetings of professional organizations are listed along with a year-round selection of special events. Topic: Volunteer Appreciation - The Care and Feeding of a Volunteer. Nonprofits have a critical need for volunteers because budgets rarely provide adequate funds for all the personnel needed to operate efficiently and effectively. Volunteers fill the void by providing much needed assistance to staff and directors. Cindi Wiehle will share some thoughts with participants on how to retain valuable volunteers by showing them levels of appreciation that will cement their relationship with your organization and expand the volunteer's enjoyment of serving others. - Session 1 - Public Charities, Private Foundations and Supporting Organizations -- This session outlines the basic rules governing charitable organizations, examines the key differences between public charities and private foundations, discusses additional operational rules facing private foundations and explains why Type III supporting organizations are no longer the cure-all to avoiding private foundation status.
- Session 2 - Revised IRS Form 990 -- The IRS ended 2007 with a bang when it released the revised Form 990. The IRS is requiring all nonprofits to use the revised Form for their 2008 tax year. This session will discuss the key changes to the Form 990 and highlight its potential pitfalls so you and your organization will be ready when the revised Form is due.
- Session 3 - Executive Compensation -- Since the IRS launched its executive compensation compliance initiative in 2004, it has continued to scrutinize whether nonprofits are paying their executives too much. We will discuss recent IRS developments on executive compensation, the final regulations dealing with excess benefit and private benefit transactions, how to establish that you are paying reasonable compensation to your executives, and the benefits of having an accountable plan for expense reimbursement.
- Session 4 - Innovative Programming and the Unrelated Business Income Tax -- Competition for charitable donations is the toughest it has been in recent years due to our weakened economy. How does a charity raise money when donors are facing their own economic issues? One way is to develop innovative programs and activities that further the organization's mission without tripping over the unrelated business income tax rules. This session will outline the UBIT rules and how to structure creative programs.
- Session 5 - Political Campaign Activities and Lobbying by Charities -- We are in the midst of a heated election year that has already seen the IRS question several nonprofits about their political activities. We will discuss the political campaign prohibition and recent IRS guidance in this area. Further, we will outline the basic rules governing lobbying activities and when it is appropriate for a nonprofit to lobby.
